How to Choose an Expat Tax Filing Service in 2026
Compare expat tax preparation by supported forms, credentials, fees, records and communication. A practice owner's checklist, without an invented vendor ranking.
I run FileAbroad, so this is a practice owner's checklist for evaluating a service. It is not a claim that I tested or ranked competing firms. The useful comparison is what each provider will actually do with your facts, records and deadlines.
Compare written deliverables, not business labels
Self-service software, a solo practice and a larger firm can each be appropriate for different needs. A credential does not establish experience with every international issue, and a small or large team does not guarantee a particular communication style. Ask the same concrete questions of each option.
| What to compare | Question to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Forms and years | Which returns and information reports are included? | Written list covering federal/state returns, relevant international forms, FBARs and each year |
| Relevant experience | Have you handled this type of income, account, entity or election? | A clear explanation of the issues and preparation boundaries, without another client's private information |
| Who does the work | Who prepares, checks, signs and submits the filings? | Names/roles, claimed credentials and filing responsibilities |
| Fees | What is included in the starting price, and what changes the quote? | Preparation price, extra-form/account/year charges and any separate assessment or advisory fee |
| Records | What documents are needed, and who reconstructs missing information? | Secure intake method, records list and treatment of incomplete books/statements |
| Timing | When must records arrive, and who handles an extension or payment? | Agreed milestones and responsibilities; no assumed turnaround |
| Communication | Who answers questions before and after filing? | Contact method, response expectations and the scope of follow-up |
| Representation | Who can assist if an examination or legal issue arises? | Explicit representation scope and referral boundaries |
The IRS guide to choosing a tax professional and credential/representation explanation provide a starting point. A PTIN authorizes paid federal return preparation; it is not itself a professional credential or a promise of IRS representation rights.
If you are considering self-service software
List the forms your facts may require before buying a plan. Verify that product's current-year support for foreign addresses, Form 2555, Form 1116, other relevant forms, prior-year amendments and e-filing. Ask what help is available when an item is ambiguous. These capabilities differ by provider and version, so a blanket statement about “all major software” is not useful.
An FBAR is filed separately from the federal income-tax return through FinCEN's system. Check who will submit it and retain the confirmation; do not assume a tax-software purchase includes it. IRS FBAR filing explanation
DIY suitability depends on whether you can identify and document the required positions, not simply whether one particular form appears. Unclear ownership, missing records, foreign entities, PFICs, missed years or a disputed election can justify specialist help.
A short brief to send before asking for a quote
Prepare a summary of your country, tax years, employment or business income, account types, investments, entities and missing filings. Include any known notice or deadline. Explain whether you need preparation, a focused review of a self-prepared return, or a broader assessment.
Keep tax IDs, full account numbers and sensitive documents out of an initial public inquiry. Ask for the secure document process once the provider explains the next step. Preserve the written scope so “FBAR included,” for example, is tied to a defined account inventory and reporting year.
How FileAbroad fits that comparison
FileAbroad is Chip Moreno's U.S. tax-preparation practice based in Cuenca, Ecuador. You can start with a free inquiry, then agree the work and fee before preparation. Current starting fees and what affects the quote are on services and pricing, which is the maintained pricing reference.
An optional assessment or focused review can be useful when the filing scope needs separate work. It is not a mandatory paid call before every engagement. Annual preparation, standalone account reporting and a coordinated missing-year package have different scopes; see annual filing, FBAR preparation and Streamlined preparation.
FileAbroad does not provide legal opinions, willfulness determinations or IRS representation. Local-country returns and issues requiring another specialist need separate arrangements. Ask about those boundaries alongside the deliverables so the accepted engagement matches the problem you need solved.

Preguntas Frecuentes
How are expat tax service fees determined?
Confirm the years, forms, accounts, record quality and deliverables included in the quote. FileAbroad publishes starting prices on its services page; additional work depends on the agreed scope. Sending an initial inquiry is free, and a paid assessment is optional rather than a universal prerequisite.
Can I use tax software while living abroad?
Potentially. Check the specific provider, tax year, plan, required forms, foreign-address support, e-filing eligibility and assistance offered. Do not assume every product supports every international form or that an FBAR is included in an income-tax software package.
What credentials should I check?
Ask who prepares and signs the return, confirm their PTIN and claimed professional credentials, and distinguish preparation from IRS representation. The IRS explains the differing qualifications and representation rights; a PTIN by itself is not a CPA, enrolled-agent or attorney credential.
What does FileAbroad's scope exclude?
FileAbroad provides accepted U.S. preparation within an agreed scope. It does not provide legal opinions, willfulness determinations or IRS representation. Local-country returns and specialist issues require separate arrangements. Check the written scope for the actual engagement.
