Start a private records folder
- Keep copies of your last filed federal and state returns and any filing confirmations.
- Gather wage, self-employment, pension, investment, and other income statements.
- Collect foreign tax returns, assessments, and proof of tax payments.
- List records you are missing and who can provide them.
Organize your move and travel records
- Record departure, arrival, and U.S. visit dates, including travel days.
- Keep residence, employment, lease, and home-sale records for discussion with your preparer.
- Record address changes and the institutions you need to notify.
- Ask how federal, state, and local-country obligations apply to your own facts.
Inventory accounts and changes
- Make a private list of foreign accounts, ownership, and signature authority.
- Keep statements needed to review balances throughout each calendar year.
- List new businesses, pensions, investments, property sales, gifts, or inheritances for your preparer.
- Record questions about missing years, notices, and approaching deadlines.
