Working for yourself from another country creates several separate U.S. questions. You may have business income, deductible expenses, self-employment tax, foreign income tax, information returns, state-tax exposure, and a local-country business registration. The correct order is to map the activity and entity before choosing a form.

Before your move: a visa is not a U.S. tax plan

Moving abroad does not automatically eliminate U.S. tax. For a U.S. citizen or resident alien, worldwide-income and filing rules still matter. The foreign earned income exclusion (FEIE) has qualification requirements, and claiming it does not itself remove self-employment tax. Start by documenting your work, travel and income before estimating savings. IRS: Americans abroad · IRS: self-employment abroad

This section is for people planning to keep working while living outside the United States. If you are choosing a visa or comparing cities, treat the U.S. tax review as a separate workstream. Immigration permission answers a different question.

1. Separate your income types

List wages and fees for services separately from interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions and other receipts. Do not assume every dollar arriving in a U.S. account has the same treatment. For FEIE purposes, where you perform the services matters; the payer's address or the account receiving payment does not decide the question on its own. IRS: foreign earned income

For a business, gather the legal and tax classification, ownership information, income statements and expenses. Do not assume an LLC is taxed the same way as every other LLC, or treat all business receipts as personal wages. Use the rest of this guide to identify issues that need a separate filing scope.

2. Check the FEIE tests before using an exclusion in your budget

A foreign tax home and qualifying foreign earned income are required. The time or residence test is another part of the analysis. The physical presence test generally requires at least 330 full days in foreign countries within a consecutive 12-month period. A bona fide residence analysis is a different test, not an automatic consequence of holding a residence visa. IRS: FEIE requirements · IRS: physical presence

A split year across two foreign countries may involve qualifying foreign-country days, but transit, U.S. visits and the tax-home facts still require review. Keep a dated travel log rather than treating “six months here and six months there” as proof of qualification. See our existing FEIE guide for the broader explanation.

3. Keep self-employment tax in the calculation

The exclusion concerns qualifying income for income-tax purposes. It does not, by itself, remove the income from the self-employment-tax calculation. Do not budget on the assumption that being below an exclusion ceiling means the entire federal bill is zero. IRS: self-employment tax for businesses abroad

Hypothetical example: a U.S. consultant continues serving clients while working outside the United States. Even if the consultant qualifies for an income exclusion, a separate self-employment-tax analysis remains. No amount of tax or savings is implied by this fictional example.

4. Add foreign accounts and local tax to the review list

A U.S. person with a financial interest in, or signature authority over, foreign financial accounts may need an FBAR if the aggregate value exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year, subject to applicable exceptions. This is an aggregate test, not a separate $10,000 allowance for each account. Other reporting, including Form 8938, can have different rules. IRS: FBAR

List the institutions, countries, account nicknames, ownership or authority and available statements in your private records. Keep full account numbers out of a general contact form.

Local tax duties require a separate review with someone qualified in the country concerned. For Ecuador, do not rely on informal claims that authorities lack financial information: SRI publishes information about its international tax-transparency and CRS framework. That does not establish which account data would be available in any specific case, and this guide does not determine your Ecuador tax liability. SRI: Foro Global

General educational information, checked September 20, 2026. The answer depends on the facts and tax year. No tax savings or qualification is promised.

Start with the person and the activity

Describe what you do, who contracts with you, where the services are performed, how customers pay, and whether anyone else owns the business. A freelancer providing services personally is not analyzed the same way as a foreign corporation, partnership, or single-member entity.

Collect:

  • Contracts, invoices, payment-platform statements, and expenses.
  • Dates and countries where services were performed.
  • Business registration, ownership, and operating agreements.
  • Foreign tax filings and social-insurance records.
  • Prior U.S. returns, entity elections, and information returns.

Schedule C and business expenses

Many sole proprietors report gross receipts and ordinary, necessary business expenses on Schedule C. Keep a reconciliation from the business bank or payment platform to the U.S. return. Expenses need a business purpose and may require allocation when they also serve personal use.

Foreign-currency records are part of the tax file. Record the date, local amount, exchange-rate method, and U.S.-dollar result. Do not rely on a year-end account balance to reconstruct an entire year of receipts.

Self-employment tax is separate from income tax

The FEIE and Foreign Tax Credit address income-tax calculations; they do not automatically remove self-employment tax. Review net earnings from self-employment, the applicable Social Security and Medicare rules, and whether a totalization agreement assigns coverage to the foreign country. A certificate of coverage or equivalent evidence may be necessary.

For Social Security coverage and a certificate of coverage analysis under a totalization agreement, use the totalization consultation once the worker, employer/business, residence, and work-country facts are mapped.

FEIE, FTC, or both

If the services produce foreign earned income, Form 2555 may be relevant when the physical-presence or bona-fide-residence test is met. Foreign income taxes may support Form 1116 if the tax and source rules are satisfied. The same income cannot be excluded and also support a credit for the related tax. Model the options over more than one year when income is variable.

Foreign entities and Form 5471/8865/8858

A foreign company may be a corporation, partnership, or disregarded entity for U.S. purposes. The classification can trigger Form 5471, Form 8865, Form 8858, GILTI, Subpart F, or other reporting. Do not assume a local LLC is the U.S. equivalent of a U.S. LLC. If the work is carried on through a co-owned foreign entity, read the Form 8865 filing guide and use the foreign partnership consultation before assuming either a filing category or a partner-level self-employment result.

Quarterly estimates and state domicile

Clients without U.S. payroll withholding may need quarterly estimates. The calculation should include self-employment tax, foreign credits, the FEIE, and prior-year safe-harbor rules. Separately, a former state may continue to assert domicile or statutory residency until ties are severed and documented.

Scope boundary

This guide is educational and does not determine entity classification, treaty coverage, totalization eligibility, state domicile, or the deductibility of a particular expense. FileAbroad can prepare an expat self-employment filing within a written scope through the tax filing intake. Entity, payroll, or legal questions may require additional specialists.

Perguntas Frequentes

Do self-employed Americans abroad file Schedule C?

Many individuals who carry on a U.S. trade or business as sole proprietors report business income and expenses on Schedule C, but entity classification, partners, and local business law can change the filing path.

Does FEIE eliminate self-employment tax?

The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion generally does not eliminate U.S. self-employment tax by itself. Review totalization agreements and the applicable Social Security rules separately.

Can I use the Foreign Tax Credit on business income?

Potentially, if the foreign levy and income satisfy the credit rules. Form 1116 source, category, and limitation rules still apply.

Is a foreign LLC automatically a corporation for U.S. tax?

No. A foreign LLC’s U.S. classification depends on its legal form, elections, owners, and the entity-classification rules. The local label is not enough.

Do I need quarterly estimated payments?

You may need estimated payments when withholding is insufficient. Model U.S. income tax, foreign credits, FEIE, and self-employment tax using the current IRS instructions.
