1. The account

  • Record the institution, product, term, and the visa category the deposit is meant to support.
  • Ecuadorian accounts are U.S.-dollar denominated, so no FBAR currency conversion is needed for them.
  • Screen the account under the FBAR financial-account definition using ownership or signature authority, and note any exception that might apply.

2. Question one — the FBAR filing test

  • List every foreign account you hold; the test is aggregate, not per account.
  • Record the aggregate maximum value of all reportable foreign accounts for the calendar year.
  • Note whether that aggregate exceeded US$10,000 at any point, and keep the current-year filing status in one place.

3. Question two — the interest

  • Record interest credited during the year and where it was reported on the return.
  • Foreign interest is not earned income, so the foreign earned income exclusion does not exclude it.
  • Keep the institution interest certificates or monthly statements with the account records.

4. Question three — your time in the country

  • Record days present for the fiscal year and note whether the 183-day test is in scope for your facts.
  • Ecuador does not appear on the IRS list of jurisdictions with a comprehensive U.S. income tax treaty.
  • If residency, treaty, or a temporary regime question applies, have those facts reviewed rather than assumed.

5. Keep these records for both files

  • Deposit certificate or póliza, and the monthly statements.
  • Interest certificates (certificados de rendimientos).
  • Entry and exit records.
  • Do not discard statements once a visa is approved; the reporting question follows the account.
