FBAR for Americans with TD Bank Accounts
TD Bank (Toronto-Dominion) is one of Canada's largest banks with operations in Canada and the US. Americans with TD accounts held outside the US (Canadian TD accounts) must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year. Note: TD Bank US accounts are NOT foreign accounts and are not reportable on FBAR.
Which TD Accounts Are Reportable
TD Canada accounts held outside the US: chequing accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, RRSPs, TFSAs, and joint accounts. TD US accounts are domestic and not reportable on FBAR.
How to Get Your TD Statements
TD Canada provides statements through online banking (TD EasyWeb). Log in, navigate to "Accounts" → "Statements," and download PDFs. For RRSP and TFSA, check TD Direct Investing.
Currency Conversion
TD Canada accounts are denominated in CAD. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate.
Common Mistakes
- Reporting TD US accounts — TD US accounts are domestic, not foreign. Only TD Canada accounts are reportable.
- Forgetting RRSPs and TFSAs — reportable on FBAR.
- Not aggregating — combine with all other foreign accounts.
- Using wrong exchange rate — Treasury year-end rate.
FBAR Deadline & Filing Process
Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
