FBAR for Americans with RBC Accounts
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is Canada's largest bank. Americans with RBC accounts held outside the US must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year.
Which RBC Accounts Are Reportable
All RBC accounts held outside the US: chequing accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs, and joint accounts.
How to Get Your RBC Statements
RBC provides statements through online banking (RBC Online Banking). Log in, navigate to "Accounts" → "Statements," and download PDFs. For RRSP and TFSA, check the RBC Direct Investing platform.
Currency Conversion
RBC accounts are denominated in CAD. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting RRSPs and TFSAs — reportable on FBAR even though they have special tax treatment in Canada.
- Not aggregating — combine with all other foreign accounts.
- Using wrong exchange rate — Treasury year-end rate.
- Missing joint accounts — reportable if you have signature authority.
FBAR Deadline & Filing Process
Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
