FBAR for Americans with Santander Accounts

Santander is a major Spanish bank with operations in Spain, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries. Americans with Santander accounts held outside the US must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year.

Which Santander Accounts Are Reportable

All Santander accounts held outside the US: current accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, pension accounts, and joint accounts. Santander operates in multiple countries, so accounts in Spain, Mexico, Brazil, etc. are all reportable.

How to Get Your Santander Statements

Santander provides statements through online banking. Log in to your country-specific Santander portal, navigate to "Statements," and download PDFs. Each country (Spain, Mexico, Brazil) has a separate online banking system.

Currency Conversion

Santander accounts may be denominated in EUR (Spain), MXN (Mexico), BRL (Brazil), or other currencies. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate for the reporting year.

Common Mistakes

  1. Not aggregating across countries — Santander accounts in Spain and Mexico must be combined on one FBAR.
  2. Forgetting pension accounts — Santander pension products are reportable.
  3. Using wrong exchange rate — Treasury year-end rate.
  4. Missing joint accounts — reportable if you have signature authority.

FBAR Deadline & Filing Process

Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
