FBAR for Americans with BBVA Accounts

BBVA is a major Spanish bank with operations in Spain, Mexico, and other countries. Americans with BBVA accounts held outside the US must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year.

Which BBVA Accounts Are Reportable

All BBVA accounts held outside the US: current accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, pension accounts, and joint accounts. BBVA operates in Spain (BBVA) and Mexico (BBVA México), so accounts in both countries are reportable.

How to Get Your BBVA Statements

BBVA provides statements through online banking. Log in to your country-specific BBVA portal (Spain or Mexico), navigate to "Statements," and download PDFs. Each country has a separate online banking system.

Currency Conversion

BBVA Spain accounts are denominated in EUR. BBVA México accounts are denominated in MXN. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate.

Common Mistakes

  1. Not aggregating across countries — BBVA Spain and BBVA Mexico accounts must be combined on one FBAR.
  2. Forgetting pension accounts — BBVA pension products are reportable.
  3. Using wrong exchange rate — Treasury year-end rate.
  4. Missing joint accounts — reportable if you have signature authority.

FBAR Deadline & Filing Process

Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
