FBAR for Americans with Commonwealth Bank Accounts

Commonwealth Bank (CBA) is Australia's largest bank. Americans with CBA accounts held outside the US must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year.

Which CBA Accounts Are Reportable

All CBA accounts held outside the US: transaction accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, superannuation accounts, and joint accounts.

How to Get Your CBA Statements

CBA provides statements through online banking (NetBank). Log in, navigate to "Accounts" → "Statements," and download PDFs. For superannuation, check the CBA super platform.

Currency Conversion

CBA accounts are denominated in AUD. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate.

Common Mistakes

  1. Forgetting superannuation — CBA super accounts are reportable on FBAR.
  2. Not aggregating — combine with all other foreign accounts.
  3. Using wrong exchange rate — Treasury year-end rate.

FBAR Deadline & Filing Process

Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
