Retiring in Colombia: US Tax Guide for American Retirees

Colombia is a popular retirement destination for Americans, drawn by low cost of living, vibrant culture, and growing expat communities. Colombia's worldwide income taxation creates unique US filing questions for retirees. FileAbroad helps American retirees in Colombia navigate these cross-border questions.

Social Security Abroad

You can collect US Social Security benefits while living in Colombia. There is no U.S.-Colombia Social Security agreement in force. There is no U.S.-Colombia income-tax treaty; review the domestic tax rules in both countries.

Pension & Retirement Account Income

US pensions, IRAs, and 401(k) distributions are generally taxable only in the US. However, if you are a Colombian tax resident, Colombia may also tax this income.

FEIE Limitations for Retirees

FEIE does NOT apply to pension or Social Security income. Retirees must rely on FTC or other strategies. FTC may be available if Colombia taxes your retirement income. Colombia's high tax rates (up to 39%) make FTC valuable.

Medicare Abroad

Medicare does not cover healthcare outside the US. Retirees in Colombia need EPS (public) or private insurance. Healthcare costs in Colombia are very low and quality is high.

Cost of Living & Housing

Colombia has one of the lowest costs of living for American retirees. Medellín and Bogotá are popular destinations. Housing, healthcare, and daily expenses are very affordable.

Visa/Residency for Retirees

The retirement visa (M-11) requires proof of pension income (approximately $1,000/month). The pensioner visa allows permanent residence.

Common Mistakes Retirees Make in Colombia

  1. Assuming FEIE covers retirement income — It does not.
  2. Not reporting Colombian bank accounts on FBAR — All foreign accounts are reportable.
  3. Not planning for Medicare gap — Medicare doesn't cover you abroad.
  4. Forgetting state tax — If you moved from California or New York, state tax residency rules may follow you.

When to Get Professional Help

You should consider professional help if you have retirement income from multiple sources, foreign accounts exceeding $10,000, property ownership in Colombia, or complex income situations.
