FBAR for Americans with Barclays Accounts
Barclays is a major UK bank with operations worldwide. Americans with Barclays accounts held outside the US must report them on FBAR if the aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the calendar year.
Which Barclays Accounts Are Reportable
All Barclays accounts held outside the US: current accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, ISAs, and joint accounts. The $10,000 threshold applies to the aggregate across ALL foreign accounts.
How to Get Your Barclays Statements
Barclays provides statements through online banking. Log in to Barclays Online Banking, navigate to "Statements," and download PDFs. For ISAs and investment accounts, check the Barclays Smart Investor platform.
Currency Conversion
Barclays accounts are typically denominated in GBP. Convert all balances to USD using the Treasury Department's year-end exchange rate for the reporting year.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting ISAs — Individual Savings Accounts are reportable on FBAR even though they are tax-free in the UK.
- Not aggregating — If you have Barclays plus accounts at other foreign banks, all must be reported on one FBAR.
- Using wrong exchange rate — Use Treasury year-end rate, not Barclays' rate.
- Missing joint accounts — Joint accounts with a spouse are reportable.
FBAR Deadline & Filing Process
Due April 15, automatic extension to October 15. Filed electronically through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.
