FEIE consultation

Unsure Whether FEIE Actually Fits? Map Tax Home, Abode, Foreign Full Days, Residence, Income, and Election History First.

Form 2555 is not determined by days outside the United States alone. A valid section 911 position depends on a foreign tax home, no disqualifying U.S. abode, a qualifying physical-presence or bona-fide-residence period, foreign earned income tied to services in foreign countries, and the filing-year election and calculation rules. In a paid consultation, I organize that evidence and identify the Form 2555, housing, credit-comparison, or referral work that should come next.

Physical presence and travel

Residence, services, and income

Bona fide residence factors, local statements/status, service dates and locations, employers/clients/entities, compensation components, U.S. workdays, and non-earned items.

Housing, coordination, and filing path

Qualifying housing expenses and sources, annual/location limits, spouse/household overlap, FTC and expense allocation, SE/social/state tax, estimates, and the next preparation or referral scope.

After the call

What you leave with

By the end of the consultation, you should understand the issues that need attention and the next practical step.

  • A spouse-by-spouse and period-by-period map of tax home, abode, physical presence or bona fide residence, service locations, foreign earned income, housing, and election history.
  • The exact day-count, residence, source/allocation, Form 2555, housing, FTC, self-employment/social-tax, state, extension, or election questions that require further work.
  • A focused records request for travel and border evidence, homes and ties, employment or business records, compensation, local tax/residence documents, housing expenses, foreign taxes, and filed returns, with secure-upload instructions after intake.
  • Whether FileAbroad can accept a defined preparation or comparison stage and which employment, business, mobility, state, immigration, foreign-law, election, correction, or representation issue needs another path.

You are not required to hire FileAbroad for preparation after the consultation.

Scope

What the consultation does not include

The consultation is a review and scoping session. It does not include preparation or filing of a tax return, FBAR, information return, amended return, or Streamlined submission.

It also does not create an open-ended support engagement. Additional research, document review, preparation, or follow-up work is included only when it is specifically agreed or purchased.

FileAbroad does not provide legal advice or tax litigation services.

The process

How it works

  1. 1

    Start the intake.

Tell me the broad facts of your situation without uploading sensitive tax documents through the public form.

  2. 2

    I review the inquiry.

I personally review the intake to determine whether a FileAbroad consultation appears appropriate.

  3. 3

    Book the consultation.

If the situation fits, you'll receive the next step for scheduling the 30-minute paid consultation.

  4. 4

    We review the situation together.

We use the call to identify the relevant filing questions, missing information, and practical next step.

  5. 5

    Preparation is separate.

If FileAbroad can accept preparation work, the scope and price are confirmed before that work begins.

Before you book

Questions we'll use to map your section 911 position

Which tax years and spouses are involved, what were each person’s U.S. citizenship or resident-alien facts, which Forms 2555 or 1116 and election or revocation statements were filed, and are any returns, extensions, amendments, or notices unresolved?
Where was your main place of employment or business during each period, was the assignment temporary or indefinite, where did you and your family maintain homes and personal or economic ties, and what facts support a foreign tax home and no disqualifying U.S. abode?
What were every arrival, departure, U.S. presence, full day in a foreign country, international-water or air transit, and candidate 12-month period, and do passports, border histories, tickets, calendars, lodging, and work records reconcile?
If bona fide residence may apply, what were the residence start and end dates, purpose and expected duration, housing, family, visa, local activities and tax status, trips, statements to foreign authorities, and full tax year included in the uninterrupted period?
What wages, self-employment income, bonuses, commissions, equity or deferred pay, leave, housing amounts and expenses, foreign taxes and refunds, U.S. workdays, non-earned income, social tax, state items, credits, and estimates belong to each qualifying or nonqualifying period?
What should I send before the consultation?

Start with the public intake and describe the broad facts of your situation. Do not send Social Security numbers, tax returns, bank statements, or other sensitive tax documents through the public intake form. If documents are needed later, I will provide secure upload instructions.

Will you tell me exactly what I need to file?

The consultation is designed to identify the filing issues that need attention and the information required to determine the next step. Some questions can be resolved during the call; others may require records, additional research, or preparation work outside the consultation.

Do I have to hire FileAbroad afterward?

No. The consultation stands on its own. If FileAbroad can accept preparation work, you can decide whether to proceed after the scope and price are confirmed.

Can you review documents during the consultation?

Limited document review may be possible when agreed in advance, but the consultation is not a substitute for a full document review or tax-preparation engagement.
